San Francisco, CA – [November 2024] – OpenAI has officially launched ChatGPT Search, a groundbreaking evolution of its previously unveiled SearchGPT prototype, aimed at transforming the online search landscape. The new feature, integrated into the ChatGPT platform, is designed to deliver timely, relevant answers to users’ queries by drawing from a wide array of online sources.

Powered by a fine-tuned version of OpenAI’s GPT-4o model, ChatGPT Search provides users with real-time information, including sports scores, news updates, stock quotes, and more, all accompanied by links to reputable sources. Users can easily refine their searches through follow-up questions, enhancing the overall search experience.

ChatGPT Search intelligently determines when to access the web based on user inquiries, though users also have the option to initiate a search manually via a newly introduced web search icon.

Attribution for responses is prominently displayed, with in-line and sidebar citations linking back to the relevant news publishers and data sources OpenAI has partnered with. For instance, a query about weekend events in San Francisco could yield a summary from local news outlets, while a subsequent inquiry regarding restaurant recommendations would present a curated list of nearby dining options.

In response to significant public interest, queries related to election results will be directed to trusted sources such as the Associated Press (AP) and Reuters.

Initially, ChatGPT Search will be available to ChatGPT Plus and Team users on both mobile and web platforms. OpenAI plans to extend access to enterprise and educational clients in the coming weeks, followed by free-tier users.

To further enhance user experience, OpenAI has released a browser extension that allows users to set ChatGPT Search as their default search engine in Chrome.

OpenAI is committed to continually improving ChatGPT Search, with plans to enhance functionality in sectors such as shopping and travel. The company aims to leverage its advanced reasoning models for deeper research capabilities, as well as integrate ChatGPT Search with its Advanced Voice Mode feature. Logged-out users will also gain access to the search functionality in the near future.

While some publishers have raised concerns about AI-generated overviews, fearing a potential decline in web traffic to their sites, OpenAI assures that it has taken feedback from publisher partners into account regarding the relevance of articles, summary lengths, and quotations used in ChatGPT Search.
