Emidat Secures €4M to Drive Carbon Management for Construction Industry Amid New EU Regulations

Munich, Germany, October 2024 – Emidat, a fast-growing environmental data solutions provider for the construction sector, has successfully raised €4 million in seed funding led by General Catalyst. The investment comes as the company ramps up efforts to help construction companies comply with the European Union’s new regulations requiring environmental labels for all building materials.
Founded in 2023 by Lisa Oberaigner (CEO) and Florian Fesch (CTO), Emidat offers a groundbreaking platform that streamlines the creation of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). These declarations provide detailed information on the environmental impact of materials throughout their lifecycle, including production, installation, maintenance, and recycling potential. Emidat’s platform integrates seamlessly into existing workflows, allowing data input through API, Excel, or BIM, and offers a comprehensive database of environmental data covering over 150,000 construction products.
As the construction sector faces mounting pressure to reduce its carbon footprint, Emidat’s solutions enable companies to quickly self-report, identify key areas for improvement, and ensure compliance with the EU’s stringent environmental standards. The funds raised will be used to expand Emidat’s platform capabilities, accelerate product development, and grow the team to meet rising demand.
“With 75% of the buildings we will use by 2050 still to be built, there’s an immense opportunity to reduce the sector’s environmental impact,” said Lisa Oberaigner, CEO and co-founder of Emidat. “Our mission is to provide transparent, accessible data to help decarbonize the construction industry and foster a sustainable built environment. As new EU regulations take effect, our platform will play a critical role in enabling this transition.”
The construction and real estate industries account for 39% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with over half coming from embodied carbon—emissions related to manufacturing, transporting, and disposing of building materials. Despite improvements in energy efficiency, embodied carbon emissions are on the rise, growing from 11% of global greenhouse gas emissions in 2021. Given the scale of new construction anticipated—equivalent to building a city the size of New York every month for the next 40 years—managing the environmental impact of construction materials is more urgent than ever.
Samuel Beyer, investor at General Catalyst, emphasized Emidat’s pivotal role in this transformation. “We view Emidat as a key enabler for decarbonizing the built environment. Its platform is not just a compliance tool, but a collaborative space where the industry can exchange material data, driving efficiency and accelerating the transition to more sustainable practices.”
Emidat has already onboarded several leading global construction material suppliers, including three of the world’s largest concrete manufacturers, positioning itself as a key player in the sector’s shift towards sustainability. The company’s vision is to become the central operating system for environmental data in construction, providing architects, developers, and contractors with the insights they need to make informed, eco-friendly decisions on every project.
